Over 40 solar-powered vessels are setting out today on a one-week voyage along 11 Frisian towns. The 'Frisian Solar Challenge' is the sunny counterpart of the 11-town skating marathon.

The race in the northeastern province began with a 10-kilometre prologue around the city of Leeuwarden followed by a 150-metre sprint.

The teams joining the quest come not only from the Netherlands but also from Germany, Poland, Belgium and Brazil. A single US team dropped out at the eleventh hour due to technical problems.

The teams compete in three categories, each with a minimum average speed, which ranges between eight and 12 kilometres per hour.
