AMSTERDAM – Despite Nicolas Sarkozy's victory in the French elections on Sunday, most French nationals living in the Netherlands cast their vote for socialist candidate Ségolène Royal.

Regardless of whether they favoured Sarkozy or Royal, most voters heading to the French consulate on Sunday said the main issue of these elections was the relatively high unemployment rate.  The youth simply must have better prospects of finding work if anything is to be solved.

Ségolène Royal received 59.7 percent of the votes cast at the consulate in Amsterdam on Sunday. Despite the holiday period, voter turnout on Sunday matched the turnout for the first round on 22 April.
