Freedom Party joins Limburg's provincial government

In the Province of Limburg, the Christian Democrats and conservative VVD have reached agreement to form a provincial government with Geert Wilders' Freedom Party.

Limburg is the only province to include the controversial anti-Islam party in the provincial government. The Freedom Party narrowly came first in Limburg, just beating the Christian Democrats.

Nationally, the Freedom Party PVV came fourth in the provincial poll in March with 12 percent of the vote. It was the first time Geert Wilders had fielded candidates in a provincial election.

The elected members of the provincial councils will vote for the 75 members of the Upper House of Parliament on 23 May.

The minority VVD-Christian Democrat government is supported in the Lower House by Freedom Party MPs. The three parties hope to gain a majority in the Upper House to make it easier to pass legislation. Otherwise the cabinet will be forced to make deals with the opposition in order to realise its policies.
