Researchers say Geert Wilders and his party fit the profile used to designate extreme right-wing ideology.

THE NETHERLANDS – According to the 2008 Racism & Extremism Monitor, compiled by the University of Leiden and the Anne Frank House, Dutch MP Geert Wilders and his Freedom Party (PVV) can be called an extreme right-wing party.

The researchers say the PVV fits the profile used by social scientists to designate extreme right-wing ideology.

Extreme right-wing parties demonise Muslims, other non-Western immigrants and political opponents and denounce them in powerful terms. The researchers have called for the judiciary to determine whether Wilders' speeches and pronouncements can be considered discriminatory.

A few months ago, the Public Prosecutor's Office dismissed dozens of complaints about the PVV leader's film Fitna. Despite the dismissal, researchers say that some of Wilders speeches are discriminatory and therefore liable to punishment.
