AMSTERDAM — Several crew members of a fishing boat were injured on Wednesday when a bomb they hauled aboard in a net exploded, the Dutch coastguard said.

The vessel was about 100km off the coast of IJmuiden when the accident occurred. Some of the crew were also thrown overboard in the blast.

The coastguard centre in the northern port of Den Helder received a report of the blast on the fishing ship OD-1 at 3.20pm.

A KNRM rescue squad ship, a naval vessel and the fisheries inspectorate ship Barend Biesheuve put to sea in a bid to reach the stricken boat. A rescue helicopter and a Lynx helicopter were also sent to the area.

Another fishing boat was already reported to be at the scene by late afternoon to lend assistance. No word on fatalities was immediately available.
