EINDHOVEN  - Four of the nine soldiers arrested for assaulting a 28-year-old homeless man in Eindhoven were released on Thursday afternoon. Two women and two men were released, said a spokesperson for the Marechaussee.

The spokesperson says that the investigation did not require them to be held any longer. They remain suspects in the case.

The homeless man was beaten in the early hours on Wednesday and was unconscious for some time and admitted to hospital. He will be held in hospital for observation over the weekend, according to a spokesperson for the Marechaussee.

The suspects beat the man for no apparent reason, a police spokesperson said on Wednesday. The regional police say alcohol might have been involved.

Defence Minister Eimert van Middelkoop called the attack "cowardly and extremely reprehensible behaviour" on Wednesday and said that dismissal was a possible sanction for those involved.
