AMSTERDAM — Four people have been arrested by police in Amsterdam following the death of a six-day-old baby in October.
The Public Prosecutor's Office said on Tuesday evening that the four detainees are the child's parents, a grandfather and the grandfather's girlfriend. They have not been named.
The baby — the statement did not say if it was a boy or a girl — died at the end of September shortly after being admitted to the AMC hospital in Amsterdam with injuries.
Investigators suspect all four suspects of serious mistreatment of the victim, resulting in the child's death. The four have been placed in "restrictive custody". This means they have no visitors and have no access to television or newspapers.
Officials of the childcare agency 'Bureau Jeugdzorg' in Amsterdam had been working with the family for a year following difficulties in relation to the victim's stepsister, aged 7. This child was placed in care following the death of the baby.
The agency has begun an internal investigation into its handling of the case.
