Four Dutch tourists have been killed and another wounded when a hot-air balloon exploded after taking off in Yangshuo, reports Chinese state television.

Beijing – Four Dutch tourists were killed in the scenic southern Chinese town of Yangshuo on Wednesday when a hot-air balloon exploded and crashed, Chinese state television reported.

China Central Television (CCTV), reported seven people were on board the balloon which went out of control and exploded soon after taking off in Yangshuo.

It said five of the balloon's passengers were foreigners, all of them Dutch nationals, four of whom died in the tragedy.

While no information about the identities of those killed was given, Chinese news agency Xinhua said the dead included three men and one woman.

It said the other three people aboard the balloon were rushed to hospital for treatment of injuries but did not say how badly they were hurt.

Xinhua says the pilots lost control of the balloon shortly after it left the ground and that it burst into flames at a height of about 150 metres.
Yangshuo is a popular tourist spot in the Guangxi region famed for its scenic karst hills.

Tourists often go on balloon tours to see the limestone peaks.

Dutch embassy staff are now travelling to the scene.
