Participants for the 94th annual International Four Day Marches have been arriving in the eastern Dutch city of Nijmegen. For the event, which begins on Tuesday, 48,435 participants registered to take part. After lots were drawn, the number was reduced to 45,000, the maximum permitted by the organisers.

On Sunday evening, the city’s De Goffert football stadium will play host to the traditional flag parade, in which the flags of all participating countries will be put on display.

The International Four Day Marches or Vierdaagse is the largest marching event in the world and takes place every year in Nijmegen. The participants cover 30, 40 or 50 kilometres daily.
