AMSTERDAM — The public prosecution (OM) asked Arnhem Court on Thursday to impose a 15-month jail term on a former judge accused of possessing child pornography.

The prosecution said the former vice-president of the Maastricht Court had about a dozen video tapes and four discs of child pornography when his home was searched in October 2001. The judge, identified as F. F., subsequently resigned from his post.

On request from the chief prosecutor in Maastricht, the Arnhem prosecution department took over the investigation to prevent allegations of bias, news agency ANP reported.

The inquiry was not completed until December 2003 because of inquiries into other crimes, the nature of which have not been officially revealed. The child pornography was allegedly found by an electrician doing work in the judge's house.

The suspect's lawyer said the former judge did not attend Thursday's hearing because of concerns that he had recently been improperly approached by journalists and television media.
