Football: FC Groningen win eighth match in a row

Friday's Dutch Premier League action saw FC Groningen, playing home, win for the eighth time in a row. Vitesse held their own for the first half but after half-time saw FC Groningen take a 3-0 lead, with the final score 4-1.

All the snow had been cleared from the pitch but freezing temperatures of minus 10 C meant the surface was hard as rock. Even so, FC Groningen occasionally engineered some superb combinations.

In the second half FC Groningen's Andreas Granqvist converted a penalty, his sixth of the season. Tim  Matavz and Petter Andersson then brought the score to 3-0. Vitesse's Marcus Pedersen briefly narrowed the margin but just a minute later Tim Sparv restored FC Groningen's lead to 4-1.

Thanks to this victory, FC Groningen has climbed to third spot.
