Football: Ajax on top after defeating Feyenoord

In the season's first classic, Ajax scored an easy 2-1 victory over Feyenoord, taking the lead in the Premier League after PSV suffered a goalless draw against Roda JC.

Feyenoord only managed to threaten Ajax in the final phase, when Bahia scored the only goal for the Rotterdam team. But Feyenoord's final offensive failed to yield any further goals.

After the match, Feyenoord coach Mario Been expressed relief that his team had got away with just two goals by Ajax, saying the Amsterdam squad could have scored many more.

Ajax especially dominated the first half, with Siem de Jong netting the first goal just before the interval. Several times the Amsterdam footballers hit the post and once the ball was kicked from the line. But in the 56th minute Mounir El Hamdaoui succeeded where others had failed, scoring Ajax' second goal.

Ajax coach Martin Jol voiced satisfaction at his team's performance, which somewhat compensated Wednesday's humiliating 2-0 defeat by Real Madrid.

National champions FC Twente held Heracles to a goalless draw at home. AZ barely managed to defeat NEC 1-0, notching up their first victory of the season. FC defeated VVV Venlo at home 3-2.
