Food bank for pets

AMSTERDAM—In an effort to prevent pets from becoming victims of the economic crisis, the non-profit organization Animal Rescue Netherlands is handing out food packets to pet owners who are also clients of food banks in Amsterdam.
According to chairman Jack de Jongh, pet food is one of the first expenses that people cut back on when finances are tight. The credit crises is making it increasingly more difficult for many pet owners to care for their pets.
The initiative could help prevent situations where large numbers of people unable to cover the costs of maintaining a pet abandon them, or drop them off at animal shelters.
The foundation has approached several pet food factories in an attempt to put together food parcels for pets.
