AMSTERDAM – Schiphol was facing some unexpected problems this morning because of the heavy fog. At least 35 flights had to be diverted to other airports because it was impossible to land. Other flights circled above the airport waiting for the weather to clear.

The problems arose at about 7.30 a.m. Many flights were already en route to Amsterdam because the fog had not been forecast by meteorologists. The problems are expected to clear up by noon.

There were three collisions on the A27 near Almere because of the fog. More than 25 cars were involved but no serious injuries have been reported.
