Flu epidemic worsens
The Netherlands is in the grip of a worsening influenza epidemic, according to figures released by the Netherlands Institute for Health Services Research (NIVEL).
AMSTERDAM—Last week 131 out of every 100,000 members of the population were displaying flu-like symptoms. A week earlier the figure was only 104. The threshold for an epidemic is 50 sufferers per 100,000 people.
Twice as many people are contracting the flu virus as did so during last year's mild epidemic. NIVEL reports that this year all age groups are being affected. Moreover, GPs are encountering more complications such as bronchial infections.
