Scheveningen - Vlaggetjesdag (Flag Day) has been celebrated in the seaside resort of Scheveningen close to The Hague. The annual event marks the start of the herring season: salted herring is a Dutch national dish.

The festivities, which included a parade of boats, were opened by Fisheries Minister Gerda Verburg and attracted an estimated 300,000 people. Newcomers to the Netherlands who are following integration courses were invited to take part in the event for the first time.

Last Tuesday, this year's first barrel of herring was auctioned for EUR 66,000. Connoisseurs say the standard of herring has rarely been so high as at the start of this season.
