AMSTERDAM — Police arrested five people on Wednesday morning after shootings resulted in two fatalities in the southern Dutch city of Maastricht.

A 41-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman were arrested in Maastricht and German police arrested three men in a car. The actions of the five are still under investigation, police said.

Police were informed at 4.30am on Wednesday that a severely wounded person had been brought to Maastricht Academic Hospital. The victim died a short time later.

Almost at the same time, police were told that shots had been fired in the vicinity of the Proosdijweg. A dead body was later found behind houses in the area, news service nu.nl reported.

A police spokesman said the circumstances of the shooting are not yet known and it is uncertain whether the two deaths were linked. The identity of the victims is not yet known.

A section of the Proosdijweg and several side streets were sealed off as police searched the area. Witnesses claim to have seen one of the injured victims left at the hospital by four men in a car with German number plates.
