AMSTERDAM — Artis in Amsterdam has announced the birth of a baby elephant at the zoo.
The zoo announced that mother Thong Tai gave birth to a 100-kilo female on Tuesday evening.
It was Thong Tai's first baby and both mother and child are said to be in good health. Artis is launching a competition to enable the public to pick a name for the newcomer.
Thong Tai, a 16-year-old Asian elephant, arrived in Artis in 2003 as part of an international breeding programme for the threatened species.
Shortly before her arrival in Amsterdam, she mated with bull elephant Alexander in Blijdorp zoological gardens in Rotterdam. She became pregnant in September of that year. Elephant pregnancies run for 22 months.
Blijdorp coordinates the Asian elephant breeding programme in European zoos.
Two weeks ago, two lion cubs were born at Artis.
