ROTTERDAM – A family from Rotterdam has filed a claim against Blijdorp Zoo. Their lawyer Frank van Ardenne says that the family feels gorilla Bokito's escape from his habitat was such a traumatic experience that they want a criminal investigation started.

The are accusing Blijdorp of negligence, the lawyer said on Tuesday. "The zoo did not take enough care to ensure that this dangerous animal could not escape."

The parents were at the zoo with their children aged one and three when Bokito escaped his habitat and attacked a woman. The family fled into a restaurant for safety.

The 3-year-old boy is still upset. The lawyer says the child is having trouble sleeping and has been suffering panic attacks.

The parents also feel that Blijdorp has not provided adequate after-care, the lawyer said. The family did not receive a phone call about the incident until Tuesday. They now want to take the matter to court.

"We and many others barely escaped a catastrophe. The fact must be impressed upon Blijdorp that this must never happen again," the family said via their lawyer.
