AMSTERDAM — Colonel Leanne van den Hoek has become the first woman general in the Dutch armed forces.

Defence Minister Cees van der Knaap promoted her to the rank of brigadier general on Wednesday.

She takes over as head of the personnel branch of Land Forces on 1 November 2005.

Brigadier general Van den Hoek has held various top postings within the Dutch Army.

She was the first female battalion commander in 2001 and is currently head of the Defence Ministry's Inspection and Selection Institute.
