AMSTERDAM — The first night of the international fireworks festival in Scheveningen was cancelled on Wednesday when a sudden cloudburst caused drain covers to pop open and drains to overflow.

With sewage pouring over the road making the surface both slippery and rather unsavoury, the decision was taken to cancel the show.

The boulevard in Scheveningen was still pretty smelly on Thursday morning when municipal cleaners began the big clean up and the unblocking of drains.

According to the police, by 9pm when it began to rain heavily there were already 15,000 people gathered on the boulevard.

The first rockets of the 27th annual festival were due to be launched by last year's winner, China, an hour later, at which time the numbers would have doubled.

The organisers declared that they were reasonably optimistic of better weather for the rest of the festival that closes on Saturday night
