TILBURG – Train service between Roosendaal and Tilburg was disrupted this afternoon because of a number of fires by the side of the tracks.

A spokesperson for the police says the small fires were caused by sparks from a train with a brake that was stuck.

15 fire trucks and 90 fire fighters were called out to extinguish the fires in Tilburg, Gilze-Rijen and Zegge. Passenger traffic was stopped and three freight trains carrying flammable substances were detoured to safe areas, said a fire official.

The situation was under control by about 2 pm and operation has resumed.
