ROTTERDAM  - The Central Station in Rotterdam was evacuated for some time last night because of a serious fire on an intercity train. Train service was interrupted last night but has since resumed.

A conductor reported a fire on the intercity from Eindhoven to The Hague at 10.15 pm. The 50 to 100 passengers on board were evacuated safely and no one was injured. Four tracks had to be shut down.

The entire station was evacuated after the report at 22.35 pm that the fire had spread.

The fire was under control by about 11 pm and tracks were freed up at 11.30 pm. Two carriages were entirely burnt out however.

Investigation by the Railway police and the national police force (KLPD) indicates that the fire was not an accident but was set.

Further details have not been determined, the KLPD said today.

The burnt out carriages were brought to Haarlem in the course of the night for the investigation. Passengers who may have seen anything suspicious before the fire are being asked to contact the Rotterdam police.
