Fire kills 80,000 chickens

Almost 80,000 chickens have been killed in a fire at a farm in eastern Dutch town of Boven Leeuwen. The cause of the fire is not known.

Local firemen had to be assisted by a regional corps. The fire caused a temporary power cut in the area.

An animal campaign group Wakker Dier Awake Animal has been campaigning to improve legislation to protect animals from fires in chicken coops and barns. Wakker Dier says more than a million animals have died in fires on farms in the last five years.
