AMSTERDAM – About 89,000 secondary school students will start their final written exams today.

Some 50,500 students in senior general secondary education (HAVO) and 35,500 in university prep programmes (VWO) will be sweating over the desks today. Some 115,000 students in preparatory secondary vocational education (VMBO) start final exams on Monday.

For the first time examination candidates are allowed to use a Dutch dictionary during all subject exams. But students are warned against taking too much time to look things up.

Complaints about the exams can be made to LAKS, the national action committee for school students.
