THE HAGUE – The number of welfare recipients under the age of 65 fell to 297,000 during the first quarter of this year. This brings the number of benefits recipients to under 300,000 for the first time since 1981.

The number of people on benefits for more than a year has also fallen significantly, according to figures published by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) on Thursday.

The number of welfare recipients fell by 9 percent, or 30,000 cases, compared to the first quarter of 2006.

The number of people on benefits for more than a year was about 16,000 less at the end of the first quarter of 2007 than a year earlier. The CBS attributes the decrease to the improving labour market.
