Nuffic the Dutch organisation for international cooperation in higher education has stopped granting scholarships in reaction to plans to cut the development cooperation budget announced by the new Dutch government.

Nuffic spokesman Joep Houterman says this is a "temporary measure to give the deputy minister a chance to make his choices."

Nuffic currently grants around 2,000 scholarships which enable foreigners to study in the Netherlands. The organisation also makes use of the expertise of Dutch higher education establishments to supply advice and know-how to improve the quality of courses in other countries.

Nuffic expects the number of foreign students receiving scholarships will decrease but still does not know how much deep the cuts will be.
