VOORBURG – The number of divorces in the Netherlands has fallen slightly. 31,700 couples divorced in 2006, virtually the same number as in the previous year. Another 3,900 married couples opted for a "quick divorce" by converting their marriage into a registered partnership which could subsequently be dissolved at the town hall.

This has emerged from figures published by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) on Monday.
