APELDOORN – A 47-year-old man was shot dead at the Berg en Bos primary school in Apeldoorn on Thursday morning after dropping his child off at school. The man was fired upon at about 8.50 am on the Callunalaan as he walked back to his car.

The victim died on the scene, police reported this morning.

The police say the victim's 6-year-old child did not witness the shooting, nor did any other children at the school. Victim support services have already arrived at the school.

Two parents of other children at the school, one of them a doctor, tried to resuscitate the man, but to no avail.

The suspect is still fugitive. Local newspaper De Stentor reports that the gunman was on a scooter.

Police are also unclear as to the motive.

Afternoon lessons are proceeding as planned for the older groups, the school has announced. Children in the younger groups may be picked up by parents or stay at the school for counselling.
