AMSTERDAM - A 19-year-old man from Capelle aan den IJssel was killed in a serious car accident on the A1 this morning. The passenger in the car, an 18-year-old from Rotterdam, was taken to hospital in critical condition. The accident took place near Enter in Overijssel.

A total of nine people were injured and brought to hospitals in Enschede, Almelo and Hengelo.

At least five vehicles were involved in the crash, including two lorries, two vans and a car. The police say that poor visibility because of heavy fog may have contributed to the incident.

The southbound lane of the A1, from Enter to Enschede, is closed and will remain closed until at least 9.30 a.m. today.  Traffic is being directed via a detour. "There is a lot of debris on the motorway," say police.
