FC Twente lost its lead in the premier league on Saturday. The team from Enschede in the south east of the Netherlands lost against NAC, while rivals PSV beat Excelsior at home.

A goal by Daan Bovenberg put Rotterdam's Excelsior in the lead initially. However, within 50 minutes, counterattacks by PSV Eindhoven's Jeremain Lens, Wilfred Bouma and Ola Toivonen put Excelsior 3-1 behind. Guyon Fernandez tried to bring his team back into the game with a second goal, but Marcelo had the last word and sealed a 4-2 victory for the new premier league leader.

FC Twente's away game against NAC Breda began promisingly. Bryan Ruiz opened the scoring in the 22nd minute and Twente maintained a 0-1 lead in the first half.

NAC striker Ali Boussaboun scored the equaliser in the 88th minute. A huge blunder by Thilo Leugers of FC Twente allowed Matthew Amoah to score the winning goal in the last minute of the match. It is FC Twente's first defeat of the season.

PSV is now two points ahead of last season's champion. Ajax and FC Groningen are six points behind.

A match between Roda JC - FC Utrecht was cancelled due to extremely heavy rainfall.

Sunday's premier league matches are: VVV-Venlo - Vitesse, AZ - Ajax, NEC - ADO Den Haag, Heracles-Almelo - FC Groningen and Feyenoord - SC Heerenveen.
