In the Europa League, PSV and FC Twente have both lost their first games in the quarter finals. This puts the two Dutch premier league leaders in the danger zone.

In Spain, Twente lost 5 -1 to Villareal. While in Portugal, Benfica proved too strong for Eindhoven club PSV. The Portuguese club won 4 -1. The return games are due to be played next Thursday.

In Spain, Villarreal was 3-nil ahead by half-time. Goals were scored by Carlos Marchena, Borja Valero and Nilmar. After the break Giuseppe Rossi put the ball in the net and Nilmar scored again. Just before the whistle Marc Janko scored for FC Twente.

In Lisbon Pablo Aimar scored the first goal for Benfica in the 37th minute. Just before the break and just after the break Javier Salvio scored twice for the Portuguese. Ten minutes before the whistle substitute Zakaria Labyad scored for PSV. But in injury time Javier Saviola put the final score at 4-1. PSV players Orlando Engelaar and Erik Pieters both got a yellow card, which means they are suspended for the return match at the Philips Stadium in Eindhoven.
