FC Twente and Ajax League final to kick off

The Amsterdam ArenA is gearing up for the Premier League final between Ajax and FC Twente, which is due to kick off at 14.30 local time.

Trailing League leaders FC Twente by one point, Ajax need to win the match to grab the title, while the reigning champions only need a draw in their away game in Amsterdam.

It is the first time that the winner of the Dutch league title is decided in a direct encounter between the table’s top two squads.

The fixture comes exactly a week after FC Twente defeated Ajax 3-2 to clinch the Dutch KNVB Cup.

In a way, today’s match is this season’s third final between the two teams, who also faced each other in their bid to win the Johan Cruijff Schield. That trophy too went to FC Twente, who beat Ajax 1-0.

Raising the pressure even further, the squad that looses today’s final could also be eliminated from the Champions League qualifier, which is likely to be secured by PSV, provided they beat FC Groningen.
