AMSTERDAM — The tax-free allowance for expenses incurred by voluntary workers is to be doubled next year, it was reported on Friday.
Newspaper 'Nederlands Dagblad' cited an 'insider' who confirmed the allowance would increase from EUR 735 to EUR 1,500.
The measure is part of Tax Minister Joop Wijn's tax plan for 2006. Most of the proposals have already been leaked to the media well in advance of Budget Day in the third week of September.
Wijn plans to increase various tax allowances to improve the purchasing power of several sections of Dutch society. Corporation tax is also be reduced.
There are about one million voluntary workers in the Netherlands. But recent studies have shown that sport clubs and other organisations have a shortage of people willing to do unpaid, volunteer work.
The government hopes doubling the tax-free allowance on expenses will stimulate more people to get involved in community work.
