Expatcenter Amsterdam expands its services
In June 2008, Amsterdam, Amstelveen and the Immigration and Naturalisation Services (IND) joined forces and opened the Expatcenter, to increase the efficiency of their services for highly skilled migrants in the Amsterdam Area.
The Expatcenter allows the employer to start the residence permit procedure for a highly skilled migrant and his family while the highly skilled migrant is still abroad.
During a single appointment—approximately four weeks after the application for a residence permit as a highly skilled migrant has been filed—the highly skilled migrant and his family members can collect their residence permits and register with their municipality (GBA). Shortly after registering, applicants receive a public service number (BSN).
As well as the above ‘one-stop shop’ procedure, the Expatcenter Amsterdam has expanded its services to include a new ‘two-stop shop’.
The two-stop shop makes it possible to receive a formal IND approval (beschikking) at the Expatcenter two weeks after the residence permit application has been filed. The formal IND approval allows the highly skilled migrant to start working immediately. The highly skilled migrant will have to visit the Expatcenter only one further time, to pick up their residence permit.
Which procedure is preferable will depend on the specific circumstances of a given case.
The Expatcenter has also expanded its services for EU citizens who are employed by a company that is part of the IND’s highly skilled migrant procedure. These EU citizens may visit the Expatcenter for their municipal registration. They may also visit the Expatcenter to obtain a special EU sticker in their passport (verklaring van inschrijving voor burgers van de Unie), if required.
