AMSTERDAM- Former Christian democrat CDA Prime Minister Van Agt has voiced harsh criticism of Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende's attitude regarding the Dutch involvement in the war in Iraq.

Van Agt is astonished at Balkenende's decision to block any investigation into the Dutch involvement in the war in Iraq. On a radio programme today he called it "putting a muzzle on Parliament."

The former politician called on Balkenende to stop blocking the investigation. "Better late than never," said Van Agt.

Van Agt criticised the Dutch involvement in Iraq in April 2004 already. He said at the time that Netherlands should withdraw as soon as possible. Van Agt said that war was being waged without a mandate from the Security Council and that the presence of the Dutch troops in Iraq was illegal.

The former prime minister said the Americans and British should never have invaded Iraq. He said that US president Bush was disregarding international rule of law entirely.
