Ex-Dutch minister can keep housing expenses
Former development cooperation minister Eveline Herfkens can keep the money she received as rental expenses when she took on a UN job and moved to the States.29 August 2008
THE HAGUE -- Former development cooperation minister Eveline Herfkens will not be forced to return money she received for the cost of her apartment in New York.
Between 2002 and 2006, the foreign ministry paid Herfkens EUR 200,000 for her rental and removal expenses after she started working for the United Nations as the assistant secretary-general.
The payments later turned out to be against UN regulations and MPs demanded she return the money.
However, Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen has now written to parliament, saying Herfkens acted in good faith. The United Nations Development Programme is also not insisting on restitution. Herfkens has apologised for her oversight and has offered to work for a year for no salary.
