Dutch European Commissioner Neelie Kroes is fed up with criticism that the European Union has too many civil servants.

THE HAGUE - Dutch European Commissioner Neelie Kroes is fed up with criticism that the European Union has too many civil servants. During an election debate, Ms Kroes said that the EU has the same number of civil servants as an average Dutch city.

She says the European cooperation earns each European citizen EUR 518.

Euro sceptic parties like Geert Wilders Freedom Party and the Socialist Party say EU civil servants interfere with everything and cost too much. D66 and the Green Left are the most pro-European.

Conservative VVD candidate Hans van Baalen says he does not want to cut the number of EU civil servants or their salaries, but does want Finance Minister Wouter Bos to negotiate a lower contribution by the Netherlands.
