Euro crisis: Rutte visits Monti and Reinfeldt
Prime Minister Mark Rutte is scheduled to pay visits to Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti and his Swedish counterpart Fredrik Reinfeldt to discuss a joint approach to the European debt crisis ahead of an EU summit at the end of the week.
Last week Mr Rutte called a number of other European leaders to discuss the issue. The prime minister says the European Union needs to unanimously agree on effective measures. The Netherlands argues for the introduction of strict rules and sanctions to enforce budgetary discipline and is also in favour of expanding the EU emergency fund.
On Sunday the Italian government agreed to a raft of measures intended to reduce the country’s huge national debt.
