AMSTERDAM - The A6 and A9 motorways will soon be widened. Transport Minister Camiel Eurlings (Christian democrat CDA) wants to make a start to the project before this government term ends.

The measure should reduce the tailbacks to and from Almere. A spokesperson for the minister did not want to confirm the report on Wednesday morning.

The NOS reports that  Eurlings also wants to put an end to uncertainty about a number of other projects pending, including the A4 between Rotterdam and Delft, the expansion of railways between The Hague and Rotterdam, and the construction of more lanes on the A12 between Zoetermeer and Woerden.

A spokesperson for the minister said he did not want to respond to the report. He did acknowledge that Eurlings has brought up the subject of traffic congestion in the cabinet meeting. "But apparently nothing can be discussed in the cabinet meeting without it being leaked."
