THE HAGUE – Cyclists may continue listening to music while cycling. The dangers to traffic safety are negligible and enforcing such a ban could only be achieved by deploying extensive police surveillance. Transport Minister Camiel Eurlings therefore does not think a ban would be a good idea.

He wrote this in a letter to Parliament. The minister announced earlier that he would not be considering a ban on mobile phone use while cycling.

Experts from the ministry have said that at most one death per year occurs as a result of the use of a mobile phone while cycling. Listening to music on the bicycle reportedly leads to a maximum of two traffic deaths per year.
