AMSTERDAM — An institutional sex offender is suspected of murdering an elderly man after escaping when returning from a family visit under escort.
Wilhelm Schippers was recaptured on Tuesday night
Later, police revealed Wilhelm Schippers, 40, was recaptured in the garden of the victim's home in the Jordaan district of Amsterdam at 10.30pm on Tuesday. Schippers had a cocked weapon in his possession but did not resist arrest. He is now a suspect in the murder.
Schippers has been institutionalised in a TBS secure psychiatric clinic since 1990 for sexual and other offences. He was on medication to combat a chronic alcohol addiction.
He eluded his guards at Utrecht train station while returning from a supervised visit to his family in Eindhoven last week.
Staff at the TBS clinic confirmed to police that he could be very violent if he discontinued taking his medication.
Police took the unusual step of identifying the fugitive and publish his photograph in the media. The TBS clinic has temporarily cancelled home visits for inmates.
