Error becomes Dutchman's EUR 43,000 mistake

The typing error occurred when a man attempted to book EUR 43,000 to his son via internet banking in June 2009.

Almelo -- A man from Wageningen mistakenly sent EUR 43,000 to a woman in Almelo, the Dutch news agency ANP reported Thursday.

The error occurred when the man attempted to book the money to his son via internet banking in June 2009. The bank account number was incorrect by one digit.

The woman has since used the money to pay off gambling debts and buy a new car, according to a report on The police also found EUR 10,000 in cash at the woman's home.

The public prosecutor has since brought a case against the woman in order to return the full sum to the man who made the typing error. In the meantime, the man will immediately receive the EUR 10,000 and proceeds from the sale of the vehicle.

Recouping the full amount is expected to take years, according to the ANP.
