AMSTERDAM – The swimming pool complex De Thermen in Alphen aan de Rijn burned down completely in the early hours this morning. As far as is known no one has been injured.

A spokesperson for the police said this on Monday morning.

The fire started in a café next to the swimming pool but quickly spread throughout the complex.

The police spokesperson said no part of the sport complex could be salvaged. The cause of the fire is still not known.

Residents of an apartment complex across the road from the pool were evacuated because of the smoke. They were given shelter at a community centre.

The police spokesperson said it would take hours before the fire was entirely extinguished.
