VOORBURG – Employment in the Netherlands rose by 2.6 percent last year. That amounts to about 200,000 additional jobs. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) announced this on Thursday.

This growth in jobs is comparable to that during the economic boom in the 1990s.

Unemployment fell in 2007 by 70,000 to 314,000. The number of job openings reached a record high of 236,000 in the third quarter of last year.

The CBS says that the number of women working last year grew by about 100,000. The number of elderly working increased by 80,000. That does not necessarily mean that older people who become unemployed find a new job quickly, however.
