AMSTERDAM – Several hundreds of people gathered for a special prayer service at the Rabitha al-Islamiah mosque in Amsterdam-Osdorp on Saturday afternoon to commemorate the 16-year-old schoolboy Youssef Mokhtari who was murdered by a classmate in front of his school. Family members, friends and students of the Amsterdam technical college also attended the service. A visitor said that it had never been so busy in the mosque. Several mosques had appealed to gather for a prayer service.

The service, partly in Arabic and partly in Dutch, is an Islamic ritual whereby people pray for someone who has died. The imam of the mosque spoke in Dutch to the youths in particular who were present in the mosque. "Ask everybody to be very patient when dealing with this tragic incident. Violence is never the solution. Islam condemns every form of violence and this does not only apply to bomb attacks or terrorist attacks but also to this kind of violence. The lesson that we can learn from this is: we must not deal with one another in this way."

Emotions ran high during the service. The imam went on to say that the world of Youssef’s family collapsed on learning the news about their son and brother. The people in the mosque expressed en masse their sympathy with the family. In a special prayer for Youssef, Allah was asked to give Youssef a place in paradise. "That would be the biggest possible gift to Youssef and his family," the imam of the mosque said.

After a row Youssef was allegedly stabbed to death by a 14-year classmate of Turkish descent in front of their school in Amsterdam-Slotervaart on Thursday. Both boys were in their third year and were studying to become car mechanics. The victim will probably be buried in Morocco.
