AMSTERDAM – About 80 percent of the more than 160,000 elderly people abused in the Netherlands each year are the victim of abuse by their partner, children or grandchildren.

The Telegraaf reported this on Monday on the basis of figures from the National Platform to Fight Abuse of the Elderly.

One in 20 senior citizens falls victim to abuse, according to the figures. In almost half of cases the individual's children or grandchildren are the perpetrators. In 34 percent of cases the individual is victimised by their partner. The figures included cases of physical and emotional violence, sexual abuse, neglect and financial exploitation.

More than 75 percent of the victims aged 65 and older are women. The average age of the victims is about 80 years. The largest group of victims are reportedly between the ages of 80 and 89.

The platform says it expects an increase in the number of cases of elderly abuse in the coming years because of the ageing of the population.
