AMSTERDAM – The El Hema exhibit organised by cultural institution Mediamatic in Amsterdam will soon have a follow up in Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht, a spokesperson announced on Friday.
Mediamatic is currently in talks with similar organisations in the three cities to organise an exposition there as well. The spokesperson did not want to disclose which institutions were involved in the talks.
The El Hema exhibit presents an Arab variation of the traditionally Dutch department store, complete with halaal smoked sausages, chocolate Arabic letters, and Palestinian scarves. The real Hema initially responded to the project with annoyance, but later lent its cooperation.
The exposition in the Post CS building in downtown Amsterdam will close its doors on Sunday. The exhibit was set to close earlier but was extended because of great public interest. The exhibit won the Dutch design award in the category "visual identity" in October.
