THE HAGUE – Eight Dutch soldiers were injured in a suicide attack in Uruzgan on Tuesday. One of them is in critical condition. 19 Afghan civilians were killed, including 13 children. Dozens of others were injured.

"The attack deliberately targeted a busy area," Defence Minister Eimert van Middelkoop told the Senate on Tuesday afternoon. The explosion occurred at a busy marketplace in the town of Deh Rawod while a Dutch patrol was passing through the area. There were women and children among the dead.

"The attack once again proves that the Taliban is out to kill Afghan civilians," Van Middelkoop said. Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen called it a "cowardly and dreadful deed."

Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende: "The international community must not be discouraged by these kinds of terrible attacks."
