Eight squatters still held in aliens detention centres

Eight of the 150 squatters and their sympathisers who were arrested last week in a police operation in Amsterdam are still being held in aliens’ detention centres.

A total of 52 people were handed over to the aliens police because they refused to reveal their identity. The eight who are still in detention will have to appear before a magistrate soon.

In reaction to questions by the Green Left party, Mayor Eberhard van der Laan informed the council that it is standard procedure to hand over people who are unable, or refuse to provide proof of their identity to the aliens police.

The mayor said this happens between 10 to 15 times a week.
